![]() “And in general, I think that meeting an author can make the idea of writing more accessible to them.” Arnold noted that, overall, the country has a “problem with literacy” and that any effort made to help children get into reading and see how fun it can be is worthwhile. “It’s pretty cool.” Arnold read several of his books to the students, not just “No Jumping on the Bed,” and even had the kids join in while reading his rendition of the “Five Little Monkeys” poem entitled “Five Ugly Monsters.” “I really just try to get kids excited about reading, about books,” said Arnold, an Elmira, N.Y. ![]() “I liked the part with ‘No Jumping on the Bed’, because I have that book,” Dane said. Classmate Dane Carlson, 11, noticed that Arnold used his kids as inspiration for a lot of his stories, including his first published work, “No Jumping on the Bed,” which details the adventures of four-year-old Walter after he jumps on his bed and it crashes down through his apartment building. ![]() “It was very interesting,” said sixth grader Emma Zulch, 11.
